I've been reading a blog by Amy Rauch Neilson
for a few months now. She almost made it to the 5 year mark and then was diagnosed with cancer again. Yes of course it was a repeat of breast cancer. Since I'm coming up on my 5 year mark in a few weeks this blog has special meaning for me.
Amy wrote today about finances related to treating cancer. It can run well into the $1000's of dollars, some times way, way past what your medical insurance well cover. I was lucky, I had fairly decent health insurance that paid for the bulk of my treatment. I ended up paying $4000, my maximum for the year plus co-pays.
Not everyone is so lucky. I have a friend who had to file for bankruptcy because of her disease. Nothing like that slap in the face. It can be terrifying when you have no insurance, no savings, no family and no where to turn for financial help and you have massive medical bills staring you in the face. That's why places like The Pink Fund and really good breast care centers are priceless. They can provide grants, misc assistance, have funds for people who fall through the cracks of our medical system. And that's why donates to these funds and centers are SO DAMN IMPORTANT. Financial stress is just as bad as the stress from treating your disease. Please support places like the Pink Fund or local breast care centers in your area.
Yes Susan G. Koman foundation is good but it focuses on research. A donation to your local center can go a long way to help women in your own community.
