Bookishness part 2

I just finished reading the book that we went to the book reading of.  Not an elegant sentence but you get the idea.

The book is Wednesday Sisters by Meg Waite Clayton.  It is wonderful.  It's one of those amazing books you pick up then can hardly put back down.  The characters are richly drawn and come alive as you read.  I LOVE books like that.  Books where the people are so real you know you could be friends, that you would really enjoy their company.

Bookishness

As I've said before I love books.  Erin and I went to a book reading last night and I came home with 4 new books, as if I need 4 new books but I couldn't help myself.  The author speaking last night was Meg Waite Clayton.  She wrote Wednesday Sisters.

Erin had been lucky enough to receive an Early Reviewers copy from Librarything.com.  The author lives in Palo Alto which is only about a 2 hour drive from here so she and Erin chatted after Erin read the book.  Meg then invited Erin to the reading last night and in turn Erin invited me.

So off we went with my niece Marissa in tow because she's up here for the month doing an internship at our friend Rob's office.  Marissa wants to be a civil engineer, Rob is a civil engineer and owns his own practice to boot.  Seems like a match made in heaven.  To connect even more Rob and Erin live together.  Yep, small world.

Marissa and I went to dinner before the reading at a Japanese place because she LOVES tofu.  Whatever floats your boat!  Then bopped over to Copperfields's to meet Erin for the reading.  After the reading we met the delightful Trish from Hey Lady, whatcha readin'? and found out about her blog.  FREE BOOK GIVEAWAY people and a terrific blog to boot.  Go talk to Trish.

Books into movies

Not always a good thing.  Last night we watch Kite Runner.  It was very well done but lacked the depth and intensity of the book.  The book was just wonderful, very descriptive and your imagination was put to good use.  Not so much in the move.

Jurassic Park was a wondeful terrifing book.  SHOULD. HAVE. STAYED. A. BOOK.  Even with computer graphics it was no match for my imagination.

I generally stay away from movies if I've read the book.  I almost always end up disappointed.  And I've been known to go buy the book after seeing  a movie because there clearly had to be more to the story than was protrayed on the screen.

BOOKS

Oh how I love books.  I went to a bookstore today to exchange, really just exchange, a sudoko book I got for LR.  He's addicted but the book I got was too easy so he asked for a more challenging one.

So I cruised the shelves looking for a new book.  In the course of cruising I found a word search puzzle.  I like those so I got it.  Then I decided to check the humor section for the new Doonesbury book.  Lo and behold they had the new book and another one so I got those.

And then I saw a new book by Jonathan Kellerman and one by Lisa Scottoline and the staff picks and ...
I displayed admiral restraint and did not get those as I'd just bought 3 books last weekend with a gift card Mom had given me for my birthday.  But it was SO hard not to pick up those books and give them a loving home.

In addition to buying books I set one free in the wild today.  My friend Erin told me about BookCrossing.com.
You can register your book(s).  They give you a tracking number for each one.  You can order stickers, bookplates, bookmarks, etc.  You record the assigned number, publish release notes and voila a freed book.
I left my first one in the waiting room at the Breast Care Center.

Who ever finds the book can go online and publish capture notes then pass the book on again.

Too cool for words.

Other great book sites

librarything.com another site where you register your books.  In this case you can join groups that share your interests.  They also have an early reviewers group where you can snag unpublished books.  I finally got one this month and am anxiously awaiting it's arrival.

goodreads.com is similar to librarything.  I just stumbled upon it but haven't have time to really check it out.
